So if study and work opportunities aren’t enough to motivate you, know that during your stay you’ll also have the chance to explore many of Ireland’s most stunning sights. Over the years, we have hosted students from virtually every country in Europe, from Italy to France, from Finland to Ukraine (and more!), and they have all fallen in love with the magic of Galway!
Our City: Galway
Céad mile fáilte go Gaillimh! Welcome to Galway, the European capital of culture 2020! Located in the West of Ireland and at the halfway point of the ‘Wild Atlantic Way’, the spectacular coastal route on the west of Ireland. You’ll be sure to fall in love with this place! Our school, a beautiful 18th-century building (pictured), is located just at the corner of Eyre Square which is right in the heart of the city so you are close to the bus and train stations, shops – everything!
Galway is a city that is rich in culture, history and opportunity. Although it has medieval roots, Galway is a modern and vibrant city home to incredible restaurants and pubs, thriving businesses, a world-class university and a population of kind and welcoming people. Located on Ireland’s West Coast, Galway is also surrounded by some of Ireland’s most iconic landscapes, including Connemara, The Cliffs of Moher and The Burren.
How To Get Here?
It’s easy! Once you arrive in Dublin Airport you can get a bus directly to Galway City. The bus journey takes no more than three hours. Popular bus companies include City Link and GoBus. Our school is less than five minute walk from the Galway Coach Station and a two minute walk from the Galway Bus Station. Let us know what time you are arriving and we can arrange for someone to meet you at the station upon arrival!
Listen to what Oscar has to say about his experience at IH Galway:
Are you thinking of studying English abroad but worried about feeling lonely or homesick, thinking about how you will fit into a new place? Then Galway is the place for you!
During the first week of your course you will have an induction day which will allow you to learn vital information, like how to get a PPS number (social security), how to register for a Revenue account (taxes) and how to apply for jobs and volunteer positions in Galway. Our staff will be on hand to help make your transition as easy and comfortable as possible.
Your week will consist of 15 hours of classes per week from Monday to Friday. The size of classes will vary, but you’re sure to meet a wide range of interesting people with whom you share common ambitions and goals. At IH Galway we pride ourselves on creating a family environment which allows students to make friends fast. After all, classes are always more fun when you have a friend to share them with!
As regards your lessons, you can trust our experienced teachers to equip you with the skills and language you need – fast! Unlike other language schools that focus heavily on grammar, at IH Galway our lessons are very interactive and aim to help students communicate effectively. Friday lessons are very important for student evaluations. You will either have to complete a test on what you’ve learned previously on the course, or you will give a presentation on a topic of the teacher’s choice. The tests and presentations allow you to assess how much you have learned and give you a great opportunity to put new grammar and vocabulary into practice.
IH Galway has a range of accommodation options to choose from, such as residential accommodation and homestays. Alternatively, you can find your own accommodation; however, students are advised to start looking early as accommodation in Galway is very difficult to find these days. More information about accommodation can be found on our accommodation webpage.
