Torres Vedras

Torres Vedras is a municipality in the Portuguese district of Lisbon, approximately 50 kilometres north of the capital Lisbon in the Oeste sub-region of the Centro region.

Torres Vedras is also remembered for the defeat suffered in 1810 by the Napoleonic troops of Marshal Masséna by the Anglo-Portuguese commanded by the same Wellesley, who organized the Linhas de Torres Vedras, fortifications in defence of Lisbon. Torres Vedras is currently an important wine production centre. The Church of São Pedro with the portal of Manuel and Azulejos of the XVI-XVII centuries is notable. The excavations of Castro do Zambujal are 3 km east of the city.
